October Handmade Parade goes online for 2021

Tuolumne County Arts’ annual Handmade Parade will be done a little differently this year.

Because of public health and safety concerns due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, TCA will hold an in-person art parade and festival in the spring, and will hold its normal October parade and contest online.

Photo and video entries into the October Handmade Parade will be accepted through midnight Oct. 31 online at www. tchmp.org. Best costume and creation will be chosen by a panel of judges.

The Handmade Parade was founded in 2016 by artists Laurie Livingston and Luanne

Tillman, who were inspired by the Hebden Bridge Handmade Parade held in West Yorkshire, England. The local event has been held each year in downtown Jamestown and has become a community festival and celebration of art and creativity. The event has grown to include live music, circus and juggling performers, belly dancers, artsand crafts-making opportunities, marching bands and a bevy of handmade costumes.

Tuolumne County Arts and the Motherlode Makerlabs have sponsored the event each year and offer workshops leading up to the event to assist members of the bcommunity in using their own creativity to design unique costumes. Local businesses also contribute to the event.
