Jumping frogs and more at ‘Calaveras Homecoming’

This year's Calaveras County fair titled “Back in the Saddle … A Calaveras Homecoming” will open its gates Thursday for four days of carnival, music, frog jumping and livestock auctions.

The Homecoming will begin with a Youth Parade at 11 a.m. through historic downtown Angels Camp, and the carnival will open at noon on four days of events for the whole family. Gates open at 8 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. each day.

The Calaveras Saddle Queen Competition will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday, followed by the Miss Calaveras 2021 scholarship pageant at 6 p.m.

Buckaroo events, including pole bending, barrel racing, boot scramble and more, will begin at noon Friday, and western events for adults will begin Sunday with stampede events at 7:30 a.m, followed by 3-man cattle penning, 2-person cattle penning, cattle sorting, ranch roping, cattle stealing and calf branding.

Musical entertainment will take place throughout the weekend, and Fun for Kids events will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day in the Junior Exhibit Building.

Three days of livestock shows and sales will culminate in a Virtual Junior Livestock Auction, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Each day will offer frog jumping for everyone: Fun Jumps just for fun and open to everyone, and competitive jumps for those looking to win the 2021 Frog Jump champion title. The competitive jump schedule remains tentative, but the International Frog Jump Finals are slated for 3 p.m. Sunday.

The Calaveras County Fairgrounds are at 2465 Gun Club Road in Angels Camp.
